Science: The Cutting Edge

"I use this cutting board periodically." HA! And that's not all: for $35 or maybe a bit more, "you have the power to create your own element! One of the greatest features of our Periodic Table cutting board design is the ability to personalize the 118th element Ununoctium." Shweet. The history of the standard periodic table is very interesting; here's a decently readable summary.

The same vendor also offers a Fibonacci-and-Einstein cutting board:

I hate the font that was chosen for ol' Bertie's observation, but c'est la vie when you're aesthetically picky. The Fibonacci sequence, popularized by infamous thriller The Da Vinci Code (or at least that's how I heard of it) "exhibits a certain numerical pattern which originated as the answer to an exercise in the first ever high school algebra text." Dan Reich of Temple University goes on to explain many more interesting things about this mathematical phenomenon, some of which go over my head. I'm tempted to include a million quotes, but you can just click through if you're interested. Speaking of Fibonacci and Da Vinci, there's not as much of a connection as Dan Brown would have us think, at least not when it comes to the classic Vitruvian Man. But let's rejoice in a beautiful print anyway:

"Masterminded by artist Danny Fein, Litographs are [made from] the text of classic books, and in almost all instances, the artist manages to include every word onto a single piece of paper. Printed on archival quality, vinyl-infused, tear-resistant paper, the text of the book is clear and 100% legible." An enchanting concept, no?

  1. As a research alchemist, I feel like I need that Periodic Table cutting board RIGHT NOW - especially to add to my pre-existing collection of periodic table/chemistry-related coffee mugs!

I feel your pain on the font thing - it's like when people use Comic Sans for anything that isn't a flyer for a kindergarten fete or something. :-P
